The History: A Classic Style Born
If you’re anything like me, you always thought Tom Cruise pioneered aviator sunglasses to the world. In 1986, Top Gun set the stage for a new fashion era. However, the reality of aviator sunglasses’ debut was very different. In 1936, the U.S. military commissioned Ray Ban to make sunglasses as standard issue for pilots in the Air Force. Pilots needed protection against sun and glare without decreasing visibility. The dark teardrop-shaped lenses do a great job of covering every angle to keep out as much light as possible. Aviators have continued to be popular among military and law enforcement personnel, but in recent years have grown in popularity among all types of wearers.
Who Made Aviators Popular?
Hollywood has started many a fashion craze, and sunglasses are no exception. Aviator sunglasses became extremely popular in the ‘80s with Top Gun and a slew of law enforcement movies. Recently, even more movies have surfaced starring actors and actresses sporting aviators. Carrie-Anne Moss showed off a pair of black aviators in The Matrix. Johnny Depp played Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas wearing orange-tinted aviator sunglasses. A more recent example would be Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They wore “Nitro” glasses by Oliver Peoples, classic aviators with yellow lenses.
What Types of Aviator Sunglasses are Available?
The newest style for aviators is colored lenses. Some of the more common colors seen have been blue, purple, pink, orange and yellow. Bolle, Oakley, Dior, Swiss Army and all other popular brands have their own designs of aviator sunglasses. Aviators are even available as prescription sunglasses.
Classic Aviator Sunglasses
The only true “classic” pair of aviators is the original Ray Ban. However, most other brands that sell aviator sunglasses have based them on the traditional, classic aviators.
Polarized Aviator Sunglasses
Many of the newer pairs of aviators are polarized. Polarized sunglasses block out the majority of horizontal light waves allowing only vertical light waves to pass through untouched.
Mirrored Aviator Sunglasses
Reflective sunglasses come with a reflective coating that produces a mirrored look. These aviators often come with a gradient coating that gradually changes from top to bottom. The main disadvantage of mirrored sunglasses is they are easily scratched. Even so, they look really cool!

Finding just the right pair of sunglasses is not easy. There are thousands of brands, styles and colors to choose from online or in your local sunglasses retail store. You want a style that looks great, offers maximum protection for your eyes, and sunglasses that are going to last. Here are some great tips on finding the sunglasses that are right for you.
Shop Online for Sunglasses
Probably the best place to find a vast selection of sunglasses is on the Web. There are retailers online that offer every brand of sunglasses you can imagine - Maui Jim Sunglasses, Prada Sunglasses, Oakley Sunglasses, Ray Ban Sunglasses and more! Some of these retailers also offer related items such as goggles or watches. So, you can do all your shopping in one place, and never have to leave your home!
Finding a Style that Suits You
Every person’s facial shape is unique. Sunglasses that look great on one person will look “not so great” on another. That’s why it is important to search for sunglasses that look great on you. Don’t choose sunglasses just because someone you know has a pair. Make sure you choose a style that looks great with your skin tone, shape of face, nose shape, and hair.
Tip: If you have a long, slender nose and chin, then small, round sunglasses with a thin frame would look better than large, thick glasses. The opposite is true if you have a round-shaped face and a very small nose.
A Variety of Colors
Sunglasses come in a variety of colors, from pink and orange to green and purple. Choose a color that goes well with your hair and skin color. If you enjoy matching your sunglasses with your outfits, choose several pair in different colors for a variety.
Sunglasses with UV Protection
UV protection (ultraviolet ray protection) is important if you plan to be outdoors any length of time. Your eyes are very sensitive to the rays of the sun whether you realize it or not. Without UV protection, your eyes are exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays that could do permanent damage to your retina. There are many types of sunglasses available online in different styles and colors that offer 100% UV protection. Though these may cost more than your average discount store sunglasses, they are going to protect your eyes, which are irreplaceable at any price! Also, sunglasses with UV protection are usually made to last, so you’re getting two fabulous benefits in one.
The great thing about shopping online for items like sunglasses, watches and goggles is you get to pick and choose from many brand names such as Maui Jim Sunglasses, Oakley Sunglasses, Ray Ban Sunglasses and Prada Sunglasses, and from all sorts of styles and colors to fit your needs. And, you can take time in the privacy of your home to shop around until you find the perfect sunglasses.

In our time and age, sunglasses has become almost a necessity for many people.
Of course, it’s original purpose is to shade our eyes from the harmful UV rays from the sun, or any harmful light source for that matter.
Today, shades have many more uses than just to protect those precious set of eyes. It has literally morphed into a fashion accessory with a life of its own.
Early trendsetters saw the wave coming and slowly but surely began their own range of designer eyewear that has today become a must-have item of the fashion conscious.
Not surprisingly, this form of eyewear is also used for sports, and there are even versions from the Electric brand!
Whatever use you have for it, choosing the right one for yourself is essential, be it selecting the right prescription or polarized ones, or simply a pair that has the proper design to make you look good.
While some people insist on original eyeglasses, there will be some who don’t mind replica ones. Whether orignal or not, you can always find cheap or discount ones online at wholesale prices.
But beware though, some replica sunglasses may not provide the same level of protection for your eyes as original ones…and worse still, some don’t offer any protection at all!

The cliché that says imitation is the sincerest form of flattery applies for sunglasses, too. Most major sunglass manufacturers price their products so high that it creates a demand in the market for cheap flea-market replicas. These replica sunglasses look almost the same and are made of almost the same materials, but do they provide the same protection or craftsmanship as the originals.
People often wonder how replica sunglasses can be priced so low. Of course, the answer is all too evident. Inferior quality of material, shoddy designing of the frames, and fake claims such as polarization ability, photochromatic ability enable replica manufacturers to sell their products at discounts. The only effort made is to maintain the same look as the original. There is no guarantee of getting any other of the benefits that the originals provide. One more factor is that replica sunglasses manufacturers save lots of money in research. All they have to do is to pick up an original product, educate themselves a little on the website of the original and copy it. The amount of money saved on research is sometimes so huge that the replica may come very close to the original both in look as well as in quality.
Replica sunglasses are sold at discount stores, dollar shops and even by street-side vendors. Obviously, they carry no guarantee or warranty cards, and they often come without proof of purchase. The buyers are also aware that they are picking up a product that is uncertified and unreliable and the sellers make no claims to the contrary. The major chunk of replica buyers are school and college students, who may not have as much money to splurge on a pair of Oakleys or Diors, but still want to look like Brad Pitt or Britney Spears. Picnickers also find themselves buying a lot of replica sunglasses when they suddenly realize that their picnic spot or beach is a tad bit warmer and brighter than what they perceived when they left home.
Economically speaking, the sale of replica sunglasses is detrimental to the same manufacturers who produce such duplicates. Providing cheap counterfeits may momentarily increase their sales, but they cut into the businesses of big brands. Consequently the big brands may curtail the entries of new products in the market and the replica manufacturers would have nothing to replicate. Having said this, it is necessary to mention that the clienteles of replica sunglasses and branded sunglasses are entirely different and there is no probability of either of them cutting into the businesses of the other.
Replicas may provide temporary elation at a very cheap price, but it is not advisable to go for such counterfeits as they provide less protection to the eyes. It is always better to shell a few more dollars when the safety of eyes is concerned.
